SHOCKHOUND: All the vocalists on Maximum Balloon are rather obvious suspects. Were you at all tempted to reach outside your immediate peer group?Maximum Balloon: "What's In A Name?"
SITEK: If I do another Maximum Balloon record, I imagine it would be that. But this record wasn't really intended as an album at first. It was just, '”Hey, I made this song, let me con one of my friends into being on it.” And once I got a few done, I realized it was actually a whole record. I work with so many people that I could do [it with] other guests, but that wasn't the intention on this past one.

AS: The song "Communion," with Karen O is a surprising detour for both of you - very sultry, very atmospheric. How did you both work on that track? Did you present her with the song?
Dave: I have always had a soft spot for Karen's "gentle" voice since we did the vocal tracks for "Maps." We were having dinner and I was playing her some music I'd been working on and true to her intuition, she sang the exact right thing the exact right way. I turned on a mic and thanked my lucky stars.

"Dave's had a love affair with drum machines and synths since the very beginning of TV on the Radio," says Karen O, whose band's three full-lengths were all co-produced by Sitek. "He's been wielding those instruments experimentally for a while, and now he's focusing them where they're most at home — on the dance floor for our dancing pleasure."Dave Sitek calls on the community to make 'Maximum Balloon'
